ASSIGNMENT 4: Video and Sound Together

Letting Go

I want to create a video that is emotionally ambiguous, leaving the viewer to interpret it in their own way. I feel that loss is very common in our lives, and it can be both good and bad. I want people to interpret this video as someone who has experienced a profound loss, not necessarily a negative one, but rather a meaningful one. I want to show the effort that this individual is going through to honor the experience, whether he forgets about it in a day or a year. I want to show that at this moment, he feels compelled to put it behind him while giving this period of their life some sort of permanence by burying it. I’m not sure what the object is, but it doesn’t really matter, and it may have some meaning. For now, it’s just going to be an object that represents. Now that I write this, the loss doesn’t really need to be a person; it can be a period, it can be relocating, it can even be accomplishing something. So this video really is going to be about someone who is experiencing either loss or change.

I have different ideas of what I want the object to be. I thought about a coin, but it could be something as personal as an article of clothing or as simple as a rock. I may change some of the camera angles, but they will mostly be pretty simple. I want the other objects to be timeless, including the bicycle and clothing. The facial expressions I am going to keep open.

I think this project will benefit me professionally because most of my videos are of people encountering a situation, and the situation turns threatening or even violent. I wanted to create something that just showed emotion and emphasized that with camera angles and lighting.

I really want to frame these scenes better to show the emotion and facial expressions. I will be paying more attention to the music and how it interacts with different scenes. I will most likely not include dialogue in this video, but I have not ruled out internal dialogue that the viewer can hear.
